Medication Reminder 2015, single channel dvd, TRT 32 minutes, Video filmed and edited by George Lyter and Hunter Reynolds
Kathleen and I became friends in 2006 through her partner, my friend Rafael Sanchez. We connected on the deepest level and our exchange of friendship was born out of the struggles of two artists trying to help each other survive the obstacles we faced in life.
In the fall of 2011, I went on a new treatment that I needed to be very compliant with—pills twice a day at the same time every day. It seems very simple, but for me it was very hard. If I got them in my mouth once a day it was a miracle. Kathleen offered in her beautiful way to simply call me every day to remind me to take my medications. Every day for nearly a year and half, I received a loving message from Kathleen. After the first 3 months, I started to record the messages while I was filling my medications. It helped us both, and even after the treatment stopped working, she still called me. It was the art of life and friendship—a perfect gift from the heart.
The daily calls and recordings had already ended when in the summer of 2013, Kathleen became ill with cancer. Now, we called each other just to check in. I began to make recorded interviews with her just a month after her diagnosis, on top of writing grants to help her raise money for her art and life.
Kathleen was aware of these recordings and I was hoping to maybe even collaborate on the pieces with her. That did not happen.
On September 2nd, 2014, Kathleen passed away. The loss has been devastating to her family and friends.
Medication Reminder is comprised of the daily messages I received from Kathleen, and excerpts from the interviews I made with her from her room on 1st Avenue. As they are audio fragments from our lives, please forgive the imperfections in the sound.
“Sweet Kathleen I miss and love and honor you everyday”
