P·P·O·W is pleased to announce its participation in ART ROCK, an installation of modular exhibition spaces at Rockefeller Center that will remain open for a week, from March 7 to March 14. Artist Sarah Oppenheimer will create a site specific installation for P·P·O·W. This solo project will stand alongside exhibitions hosted by nine other contemporary galleries.
Oppenheimers installation will address the specific condition of the exhibition space as a container. The modular units that make-up the ART ROCK spaces resemble shipping containers with interior walls structured to function as galleries: a sheet like drywall cladding is laid over a metal or wooden scaffolding of evenly spaced support studs. Oppenheimer will reconfigure the interior with incisions and displacements of the building materials that are otherwise perceived as impermeable and permanent. Using GatorPly®, a cardboard-like material, Oppenheimer designs sculptures as folded boxes that fit into the spaces where the wall and ceiling will be partially removed. Each sculpture is hinged to the wall and will protrude into the space at a specific angle. The architectural interventions are carefully calibrated to maintain the structures integrity while also creating new patterns, reflecting the use of the space. The installation draws attention to the constructed environment and how it effects human behavior. Emphasis shifts between the artwork, and the relationship between the viewer and the environment for viewing.
Sarah Oppenheimer received an MFA from Yale University and has been exhibiting her work since 2000. She has had solo exhibitions at Momenta, Brooklyn, N.Y., the Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo, Japan (both 2004), The Queens Museum, Queens, NY (2003) and The Drawing Center, New York (2002). In November of 2004, as part of Columbia Universitys Visiting Artist Lecture Series, she placed casting calls in Backstage and Show Business and auditioned performers to present four lectures on her work using identical presentation materials. |
