The Boston University School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents the group exhibition The Calender's Tales: Fantasy, Figuration, and Representation on view Thursday, February 2 through Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the 808 Gallery at Boston University.
They will be including the work of artist Julie Heffernan.
The Calender's Tales: Fantasy, Figuration and Representation presents the work of contemporary artists who have invented mythical beings, fantastical creatures, allegorical figures, and personal avatars in order to critically engage and challenge concepts of otherness. Ranging from the humble to the heroic, these characters are not limited to permutations of the cultural or racial Other; indeed otherness can also connote in this context alternate states of being or perceptions of self or society.

Thomas Woodruff The Four Temperament Variations
by Kara Rooney, Feb 1, 2012
The Brooklyn Rail
"Thomas Woodruff's recent suite of paintings at P.P.O.W. does nothing short of dazzle. Technical prowess is the hallmark of Woodruff's oeuvre—the drama of near Renaissance-like handiwork palpable in each brushstroke—as is the painter's electrifyingly clever conflation of academic art history and the post-apocalyptic sublime."- Kara Rooney

ART 21 FLASH POINTS: The New Culture Wars: What's at Stake?
"All I Can Feel Is the Pressure and the Need For Release"
December 9th, 2011
by Emily Colucci
"Perhaps ignorantly thinking that the culture wars related to David Wojnarowicz were over, I originally intended to reflect on the long-term effects of A Fire In My Belly (1986-7) in HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery from the perspective of one year after the controversy..."

"Inhabitat's Top Eco Art Picks from Art Basel Week in Miami"
by Lori Zimmer
"From afar, Sarah Frost's two massive pieces, "Error Correct" and "Sign Off" appear to be textured topographies of beige and black dots. But get a little closer, and you'll find the all too familiar recycled keys from the clunky computers of yesteryear. It wasn't long ago that computer keys weren't the sleekly designed equipment that they are today. Frost collects the obsolete keys and arranges them in gradating beiges, whites and tans, infuses in specks of black. The resulting pieces look like a star cluster, while also putting the massive amounts of unusable computer keys to good use......."

"Death to the White Cube: SEVEN"
by Paddy Johnson
After a few days at Art Basel Miami Beach, it's easy to forget that art doesn't always come in cubes. Museums and private collections offer some respite, but among the legion of Basel satellite fairs, only one dares break the mould: SEVEN. SEVEN's organizers – BravinLee programs, Hales Gallery, Pierogi Gallery, Postmasters, P.P.O.W., Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, and Winkleman Gallery, all from New York – have worked collaboratively, arranging their works in a flowing exhibition whose geography is determined less by funding and more by content.

"Seven, Miami's Scrappy, Sporting Alternative Fair, Turns Two"
by Andrew Russeth
Last week, just a few blocks south of the Art Miami fair, in the Wynwood section of Miami, seven galleries—New York's P.P.O.W., BravinLee, Pierogi, Winkleman, Postmasters and Ronald Feldman, and London's Hales Gallery—converted a 15,000-square-foot warehouse into the second edition of a fair that is called, appropriately, Seven.
Seven eschews booths, instead placing work by artists represented by different dealers throughout the space: wall labels identify the gallery to speak with about buying a work. "There is a wonderful breadth of possibilities" Pierogi's Joe Amrhein told Gallerist by phone yesterday, two days after the closing of the fair.

"Show of Support" Seven Miami by Marina Cashdan of The Times Magazine
At Seven Miami, now in its second edition, seven progressive galleries — Hales Gallery, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Postmasters Gallery, PPOW, Winkleman Gallery, BravinLee Programs and Pierogi — from New York, Los Angeles and London have banded together to prove that an art fair doesn't have to be a sardine-can-style trade show.

"This Gay American Life, in Code or in Your Face"
by Roberta Smith
"Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," a diligent exhibition centering on 20th-century portraits and self-portraits of or by gay artists, is now at the Brooklyn Museum, and it is more or less intact. Which is to say that once again, nearly a year after it was first mounted at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, it includes "A Fire in My Belly," a four-minute excerpt from a video made in 1986-87 by David Wojnarowicz, who died of AIDS in 1992, at 37.

Chimneys by Lynne Yamamoto
is now available at Printed Matter
Lynne Yamamoto's Chimneys is a collection of 100 color photographs taken by the artist of chimneys spotted on rooftops in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they are less a practical necessity than a symbol of the home's hearth, most likely introduced by Protestant missionaries from New England in the 19th century. Yamamoto's photographs follow a trajectory, from volcanic stone chimneys to more contemporary styles.
