Photography is a motif that carries through the early months of 2018. A comprehensive show of Minor White's earliest work continues through May at the Portland Art Museum. Galleries around the city pick up the theme with exhibitions by both contemporary and classic art photographers. Inspired artist pairings are another marker of the first shows of the new year, as several institutions combine resources to present shows that bring bright, lovely things to the city.
PORTIA MUNSON
Flood: “Stuff" is legitimately included in the list of mediums for Portia Munson's installation work. The upstate New York artist will collect objects in Portland that she'll incorporate into work for her solo exhibition organized by Disjecta's curator-in-residence, Julia Greenway. Munson, who works in photography, painting, sculpture and installation, uses her work to speak to environmentalist and feminist themes, which are especially emphatic in the carefully arranged monochrome masses of found objects she constructs. The exhibition is the third of a series curated by Greenway that features work by contemporary female artists. In another synergistic pairing, Munson will be hosted by the nonprofit c3:initiative, which will provide her with studio space as she prepares her Disjecta exhibition.
