Marking a tendency toward spirituality, myth, and the supernatural among artists working today in the United States, Door to the Atmosphere includes artworks in a range of mediums by Sedrick Chisom, Harry Gould Harvey IV, Cindy Ji Hye Kim, Mimi Lauter, Jill Mulleady, Naudline Pierre, Eden Seifu, and TARWUK. Apocalyptic visions, celestial visitations, and mysterious rituals and manifestations appear across these artists’ works, reflecting the wonder and the dread of living in the present as well as specters of unsettled pasts. The exhibition title, borrowed from a drawing by Harry Gould Harvey IV, suggests a threshold one might cross from earth to ether, from the specific to the speculative, from surfaces to essences, sensations, and mood.  

Harry Gould Harvey IV (b. 1991) draws inspiration from the ecological fabric of his native South Coast Region, deconstructing the building blocks of empire and illuminating the weight of anonymous labor. Foraging materials from downed trees, destroyed Gilded Age mansions, dilapidated factories, and gutted Gothic churches, Harvey creates mystical and diagrammatic drawings housed inside hand-built wood frames akin to reliquaries and large-scale sculptural installations that evoke lost histories of marginalized artisanship and backbreaking toil in the name of American industry and luxury. Harvey lives and works in Fall River, MA. His recent two-person exhibitions include Harry Gould Harvey IV, with Species, Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, GA; Coniunctio, with Kyung-Me, Bureau, New York, NY; Arrows of Desire, with Faith Wilding, David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University, Providence, RI; among others. He participated in the 2021 New Museum Triennial, Soft Water Hard Stone.
